Soft Field Takeoff

Soft Field Takeoff Perform all checks and set flaps 10º Hold full nose up elevator Check for arriving aircraft Taxi onto runway, line up with centreline and begin takeoff without stopping Slowly apply full power Maintain nose up attitude - relax back pressure as speed builds Lower nose to remain in ground effect When speed is safe raise nose to climb out

Normal landing & Sideslip

Normal landing & Sideslip Complete all checks / Briefings / etc Determine wind direction (windsock / atis / tower / etc) On final: Enter sideslip into wind, only as much as needed to counteract drift, use rudder to align longitudinal axis with runway Maintain airspeed (slips cause drag)  Adjust inputs throughout approach Winds will change, inputs must follow Hold inputs during flare Inputs will require adjustment as aircraft changes speed As the aircraft slows the crosswind is a higher percentage of our speed and requires larger inputs! Touch down upwind wheel first Roll further into the wind after touchdown Must do this to control directional control - otherwise aircraft will drift towards edge of runway Landing a little fast can help control in a slip, just a little bit of speed otherwise the flare will bounce.  EG reduce flaps by 10º Shouldn't step 3.2 adapt for under / over reading?

Crosswind Takeoff

Crosswind Takeoff A crosswind takeoff is a normal take off with the following modifications: Minimal flaps Ailerons rolled fully into wind, neutralized as liftoff nears Slightly increased Vr (rotate speed is higher) Crab following takeoff Hold the inputs! Letting go early will cause the aircraft to drift downwind.

Short Field Landing and Takeoff

Short Field Landing Set full flaps Establish 60 knots Adjust glide angle with power to clear obstacle and land in first part of runway. Establish 54 knots Enter flare Bring power idle Touch down on main wheels, apply max braking Flaps up  Short field takeoff Short Field Technique – Check your POH! Flaps 10° Use entire runway – don’t follow the lead line Stop and hold brakes Apply full power – Mixture Rich (unless >3000’) Check static RPM [POH] / gauges green Full power static RPM: C172 – 2300-2400, C152 – 2280-2380 Release brakes Use slight back pressure during roll  Rotate at published speed   C172 – 51 KIAS, C152 – 50 KIAS Climb at published speed until clear of obstacle C172 – 56 KIAS, C152 – 54 KIAS   Accelerate to V Y , retract flaps as scheduled PG 5-12, 5-20

Soft Field Landing

Soft Field Landing Set full flaps Establish 60 knots Flare normally Apply a small amount of power (about 1200) Touchdown on main wheels Apply minimum braking and maintain back pressure to prevent nose from dropping. Apply full back pressure to keep weight off nose wheel

Gusts are defined as rapid fluctuations in wind speed with a variation of 10 kts or more between peaks and lulls. The coded speed of the gust is the maximum instantaneous wind speed. Wind gusts are coded in two or three digits immediately following the wind speed. Wind gusts are coded in whole knots using the units, tens, and, if required, the hundreds dig...
