Short Field Landing and Takeoff

 Short Field Landing

  • Set full flaps
  • Establish 60 knots
  • Adjust glide angle with power to clear obstacle and land in first part of runway.
  • Establish 54 knots
  • Enter flare
  • Bring power idle
  • Touch down on main wheels, apply max braking
  • Flaps up 
Short field takeoff

Short Field Technique – Check your POH!

  • Flaps 10°

  • Use entire runway – don’t follow the lead line

  • Stop and hold brakes

  • Apply full power – Mixture Rich (unless >3000’)

  • Check static RPM [POH] / gauges green

    • Full power static RPM: C172 – 2300-2400, C152 – 2280-2380

  • Release brakes

  • Use slight back pressure during roll 

  • Rotate at published speed  

    • C172 – 51 KIAS, C152 – 50 KIAS

  • Climb at published speed until clear of obstacle

    • C172 – 56 KIAS, C152 – 54 KIAS

  •  Accelerate to VY, retract flaps as scheduled
